PIIIIIRRRRRRLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Consider anything nasty I've said about Italy so far null and void. What a game! What a performance! Wow! Turns out if they don't have an early lead to protect, they're great fun to watch.

If I had to single out one guy for praise from Italy's uniformly excellent team...PIRLO! Wow! Very good for 119 minutes, then BRILLIANT for the last 60 seconds. Hits the strike that wins the corner, then makes the startlingly lucid pass to Grosso for the goal...

Hell, even Del Piero scored.

Too bad for the krauts, who were excellent as well, in their fashion. Italy deserved this one.

I only could watch the last 30 minutes or so. But I called my main Italian friend to ask him how come Italy could not play like that more often.

It is right that we kept saying mean things about Italy, but we do forget too easily that they are tri-campeoni, in particular the way they started.

But I disagree with you slightly: from these 30 minutes Italy deserved amply to win, the krauts were playing for penalties and the spaguette knew much better than to concede a penalty round to the specialists in the matter. Great teams have that thing in them, they rise to the occasion, just as France rose to the occasion against Brazil. Italy is a great team even if we forget about it on occasion.

Yeah, they're just a totally different team when they're ahead than when they're even. (Still haven't seen them trailing!)

When they're even they chase the game, and they have so so much talent that that's great to watch.

When they're winning, though...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

A reminder of the Eurocup 2000 or how to lose a game in the last two minutes?

Quico, Daniel, it is Lippi that is making the difference! Have you ever seen italy score right after a goal? Never! They did not go back to the catenaccio, but seized the opportunity to score again.

What a game.

Not quite like the famous Italy-Germany of 1970 I wrote about it, but a great game noneless.
